Saltsburg River & Trail is operated from the 1912 Altman Feed Mill, just one of Saltsburg's many historic features. In operation for 10 years, you can feel confident knowing the staff is knowledgeable, courteous and professional. Here, the West Penn Trail passes directly by the Mill. Rent a bicycle for just $10 daily, or choose from a variety of canoes and kayaks to enjoy our rivers, dams and lakes. Our most popular excursion is from the Conemaugh Dam to Saltsburg, which provides hours of safe paddling conditions for the whole family. West Penn Trail

Walk or Bike through the Historic Conemaugh River Valley

The West Penn Trail is an ever-growing, 17-mile rail-trail between Saltsburg and the Westinghouse trailhead near Blairsville, PA. The scenic trail utilizes historic canal lines and railways, weaving through the Conemaugh River Valley. The Conemaugh River Lake section of the trail passes over four spectacular stone arch bridges built in 1907 and offers amazing vistas of the Conemaugh River. The Saltsburg section passes through beautiful backwoods by visible canal and railroad remnants, hugging the river. Bring your bike or rent from Saltsburg River & Trail. You can catch the trail running directly by the rentals or jump on a shuttle to the Conemaugh River Lake section. The trail is maintained by the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy and currently, efforts are being made to expand and link to the Hoodlebug and Ghost Town trails to the east. The West Penn Trail has been designated as a National Recreation Trail.

Westmoreland Heritage Trail

We're Expanding!

The Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation/Regional Trail Corporation's goal for the Westmoreland Heritage Trail is to construct a nineteen mile trail from Saltsburg to Trafford. Currently, 4 miles of trail are open from Saltsburg to Slickville. Take a virtual tour by clicking here.

Roaring Run Recreation Area

The Roaring Run Recreation Area is just a 15-minute drive from Saltsburg, with trailheads near Apollo and Edmon. Efforts are underway to close the 4 mile gap between the West Penn Trail and Roaring Run Trails. The area features a rail-trail, mountain biking/hiking trails, canal remnants and more. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the scenery and recreational opportunities at Loyalhanna Lake and Creek. Fishing is extremely popular and the lake contains plentiful amounts of many fish species. Boaters can also enjoy the lake with the three-lane launching ramp provided for powerboats. Paddlers can float the Loyalhanna Creek on its course to the lake, or from the Loyalhanna Dam to Saltsburg.

Enjoy a picnic at the Dam Site Picnic Area or at Bush Recreation Area. Both picnic areas are equipped with a pavilion, picnic tables, charcoal grills, drinking fountains and restroom facilities.

There's so much to do at Conemaugh River Lake. At the dam site, guests will find a Visitor Information Center, two pavilions, large playground area, softball field, basketball court, horse shoe pits and a volleyball court, making this a perfect family destination.

Our most popular river tour begins at the dam and gives paddlers a 4-hour adventure with a spectacular view. Paddle through giant pillars that once held the railways and view the wildlife.

The lake and outflow areas provide ample fishing, while hikers and cyclists can enjoy the West Penn Trail or the Woodchuck Nature Trail.

Adjacent to the dam, Bow Ridge Recreation Area offers excellent trails for hiking or biking. Downstream, the Tunnelview Historic Site provides a self-guided historic walk along a section of the Main Line Canal that once connected Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (1834-1854) There's more to know about Conemaugh River Lake. Rebecca Hadden Stone House Museum

Visions of the past come alive at the Stone House Museum. Locally donated and shared artifacts from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century adorn the rooms and a beautifully maintained herb and perennial garden grace the grounds. View antique furniture, housewares, and mannequins in period clothing. Learn about our rich history of salt wells, mining, the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, local Indian tribes and so much more. The museum is operated by the Saltsburg Area Historical Society and the garden by our local Herb Society. Hours are Wednesday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Mannitto Golf Club

Staying in town? Mannitto Golf Club is an eighteen hole public golf course just a short drive from Saltsburg. The course features bent grass greens and bent grass fairways. There are numerous trees, water hazards, bunkers and sand traps throughout the course. Mannitto is a par 71 and 7000 yards from the championship tees. From the member tees, the course plays 6491 yards and has a course rating of 69.6 with a slope of 120. The course is exceptionally long with large vast greens. Loyalhanna has a beautiful campground on the upper end of the lake at Bush Recreation Area. There are 44 campsites, the majority of which are in a woodland setting with views of the lake. Twelve of these sites have water and electricity hookups and are equipped for large RVs. All sites have adequate tent space, a picnic table, lantern holder and fire ring. The campground also contains restroom facilities, showers, a playground, volleyball court, and sanitary dump station. A primitive group campground is located at the Kiski Area, and is available to organized groups by contacting the Park Office. This area is secluded and excellent for scout groups.
